Mark Algar - Biography

About the Artist

I was born in the Yukon Territory in northern Canada and grew up in Ontario, Canada.   My interest in art began in elementary school and continued in the background throughout my working career.  In 2017, I became a full-time professional artist.

At the heart of my art lies a deep-seated passion for storytelling.  I capture fleeting vignettes of people’s lives while revealing the beauty and complexity of human presence within the world’s remarkable landscapes. My work captures the people I meet through my travels through Europe, North America, Africa, India and New Zealand, usually in a setting of unbelievable beauty – ranging from the chaotic to very calm. Sometimes there is only a hint of the human presence, such as the distant buildings in the painting of the French Alps. Other times, there are crowds of people enjoying themselves on the beach in summer.

Oil paint is my chosen companion in this pursuit. I am captivated by its buttery texture and forgiving nature, which allows me to work patiently, layering memories and impressions until the colours and forms resonate with the moment I wish to preserve. Whether painting en plein air or bringing images to life in my Belleville, Ontario studio, I strive to honour each subject’s essence.
