I completed three paintings capturing the early morning sunrise from our home in Tempe, Arizona. This one is the most recent, reflecting the strong, quickly changing hues from deep violet through bright pink-orange to the emerging lighter sky that would become predominant as the day unfolded. The light was changing so quickly that I took a number of pictures over five minutes, and selected the best image to base my painting on. I have great admiration for the Plein air artists who can work so quickly to capture these short-lived scenes. There were two specific challenges in this painting - firstly, to get the colors absolutely right, and secondly, to portray the transition between colors properly. A close look will identify areas that I painted two or three times to get them right.
J’ai terminé trois tableaux capturant le lever du soleil de notre maison à Tempe, Arizona. Celle-ci est la plus récente, reflétant les fortes teintes changeant rapidement du violet profond au rose-orange vif en passant par le ciel plus clair émergent qui deviendrait prédominant au fur et à mesure du déroulement de la journée. La lumière changeait si rapidement que j’ai pris un certain nombre de photos pendant cinq minutes et sélectionné la meilleure image sur laquelle baser ma peinture. J’ai une grande admiration pour les artistes de Plein air qui peuvent travailler si rapidement pour capturer ces scènes de courte durée. Il y avait deux défis spécifiques dans ce tableau - premièrement, pour obtenir les couleurs absolument juste, et deuxièmement, pour représenter la transition entre les couleurs correctement. Un regard attentif identifiera les zones que j’ai peintes deux ou trois fois pour les obtenir correctement.
